Beyond the End of the Road, an adventurous wilderness angling experience hosted by a local herder community. $2950 per person
Fly or spin fishing for Taimen, Lenok and Grayling, beyond the end of the road on Mongolia’s Upper Uur River. An angling expedition for adventurous anglers. The Uur River rises in the Heven Saridag mountain range and flows through thick forest and wilderness. In places the forest opens up into pastures and hay meadows that are used by the local herders as winter range for their herds. These remarkable nomads who live near the banks of the Uur will be our hosts on this wilderness angling adventure.
Your journey begins with a domestic flight to Muron, where you will start the long jeep journey to Tsaagan Uur Village. The jeep trip is eight hours or more over rough dirt tracks, so we usually break the journey by camping overnight by the Arig River, in fact it is possible to spend a whole day here on the way in to enjoy small stream fishing for grayling and lenok. Reaching Tsaagan Uur we will check in with the border guards and continue beyond the village to the end of the road where we will meet the herders who will take us further up river. In low water conditions, or with the use of russian military trucks it is possible to forge ahead further upstream, however the most reliable plan is to ride horses or hike the 10 miles from the end of the road into our base camp.
On reaching the base camp we will settle into the log cabins provided by our hosts and can commence fishing, hiking the banks to the days pools (this can involve some bushwhacking). If you wish you can ride further afield on horse back each day, or horse-pack further upstream for a few days camping in an even more remote location. The Uur is a wild river here, carving its way though the forest, shifting its gravel channels with each flood, and creating deep holes as it flows up against rock outcrops. The river holds plentiful grayling and lenok, and is one of the most pristine taimen fisheries in Mongolia. There are huge old taimen of 60 inches present here, although these wise old fish are seldom hooked and landed.
This location was featured in AEG’s fly fishing film “River Wolf” and on National Geographic’s Mega Fish Series with Zeb Hogan.
