Locally guided or self-guided trips for semi-independent anglers and travelers
We are often asked if it is possible to do a self-guided trip in Mongolia, however, going it alone isn’t a viable option. For starters you can only get the official Taimen fishing permits through a licensed outfitter, and without knowledge of the rivers and fisheries you might end up on a river with poor fishing, or worse on a river occupied by a camp or outfitter; finding a group of anglers already on the water and faced with an angry camp manager or local ranger.
Several professional outfitters in Mongolia offer professionally guided float trips and expeditions in Mongolia and are also heavily committed to protecting the rivers that they fish. These exclusive guided trips involve considerable logistics and operational expenses and come at a certain cost. While we still consider these ‘full service’ trips to be tremendous value for money, especially considering the location and fishing (you are still paying less per day than for guided fly fishing and lodging in Montana); we recognize that some anglers may prefer a less expensive trip or simply may not desire the level of services provided on our guided trips. So we have decided to provide this flexible trip planning and arrangement service to a limited number of groups each year. We know this service still isn’t cheap but we are sure it is one of the most value-for-money ways to experience fly-fishing in Mongolia.
They way it works is that you pay a fixed fee per group for our services in organizing your trip and providing you with access to a certain river, along with considerable advice on the river, logistics and fishing. You can then hire vehicles, horses, rafts, guides, cooks and camping equipment through us, and we’ll book whatever domestic flights and hotels or guesthouses you need. We call this unpackaged travel: you just pay for the services you need. You will be well briefed and advised on what to expect of your trip, benefiting from our years of experience in pioneering fly-fishing expeditions in this region along with our strong local relationships and experienced team members.
Trip planning, organization and arrangement fee includes:
• Fishing access to a specified river
• Arrangement of guide services
• Raft, canoe or kayak rental reservations
• Expedition outfitting services (equipment rental reservations, catering planning)
• Hotel or guest-house reservations in Ulaanbaatar
• Ger camp reservations
• Transport arrangements, domestic flight bookings
In addition we offer the following services and will provide a detailed quote and outline itinerary for your trip on request. Following payment of the trip fee and any deposits, the itinerary will be refined and confirmed, more detail including maps can be provided and the required services will be reserved.
