A rustic fishing camp on the Lower Eg River in Mongolia’s Bulgan Province, offering fishing for taimen, lenok and grayling. From $2750
One of the more affordable taimen fishing options in Mongolia without compromising the quality of the fishery, and a good late season option extending the fishing into October. The Eg is quite a large river here suited to fly fishing and spinning; fly anglers will find it easier to cover the water when the river levels drop in September. The Eg has good populations of Taimen, Lenok and Grayling. Taimen of 150cm are caught each year on the Eg, although these huge old specimens are quite rare.
No domestic flights or scary helicopter flights are required. Let the train take the strain for the first part of your journey from Ulaanbaatar to the river, catch up on jet-lag, tie some flies, or sample a shot of Mongolian vodka as you watch the steppes go by. Jeeps will take you the final leg from the train station in Erdenet to the camp. The camp provides accommodation in small one person and two person gers and has a simple lodge building. The outfitter has several two person catarafts (outcast fish cats) available to use from camp and the daily fishing program will include hiking the banks, floating, and taking trips further afield in the Russian 4 x4 mini-vans.
