Taimen, Lenok and Grayling fishing in the Darhad Valley, Sharga and Upper Shishged Rivers of Northern Mongolia. From $3750 per person.
Traveling to Mongolia’s famous Darhad Depression, you will fish two outstanding wilderness rivers during this two-week fishing adventure. This is a trip for the adventurous angler, who enjoys camping out, good food, excellent fishing and stunning surroundings, on a professionally outfitted trip. Enjoy wild-river fly-fishing for Taimen, Lenok Trout and Grayling with cataraft access to some of the best remote sections of Mongolia’s famous taimen rivers.
The Darhad Valley, in the North of Mongolia, is a massive bowl of grassland, marsh, rivers and lakes, surrounded by jagged peaks and rugged wilderness. The Valley has become internationally renowned for the abundant and large Taimen that prey on the white-fish stocks of the many lakes and rivers. Among the many rivers flowing into the Darhad Valley are the Khug (Khoogi), Sharga, Arsain and Upper Shishged (Shishkid), headwaters of the mighty Yenisei. These rivers find their way into a maze of wetlands, small lakes and channels eventually all emptying into Tsaagan Nuur, the White Lake. White Lake is drained by the Shiskiid River, which for the first part of its course is a deep wide slow channel, part river and part lake, until it is joined by the Tengis River and begins its turbulent descent into Russia.
The complex geography of the Darhad Valley, and the changeable nature of the rivers from fast flowing gravel bed streams to slow meandering channels cut through silt banks, means it pays to have a good guide to navigate you to the best reaches. Our local team has been operating angling adventures in this region for over ten years, and will guide you to the best waters according to the prevailing conditions. Primarily we we fish on the Sharga and sections of the Upper Shishged.
This ’safari style’ trip involves camping in tents, and some overnights at our base camps with accommodation in gers (yurts). The local outfitter here is equipped with four two-person inflatable pontoon boats (Outcast Fish Cats) and the fishing program will include several days of floating to access the best fishing that vehicle based anglers cannot reach. The itinerary is planned to maximize your fishing time, but avoid over-long days of jeep travel, and to offer a variety of rivers, fishing, and landscapes. You will also experience Mongolia’s nomadic way of life, visiting nomads in their gers to share a bowl of tea, and meeting them as they tend their herds of horses, goats, sheep, and yaks.
